We’re pleased to introduce you to our youngest Hunger Hero yet, high school senior Sophia Kostas! Sophia was nominated by her colleagues for going above and beyond to serve the hunger community.
In her freshman year, Sophia was asked to serve as a leader on her school’s hunger board. Since then, she has been passionate about educating her peers on how hunger affects their community. Every year Sophia helps promote Hunger Action Month by coordinating a series of community service events for her classmates that raise money for local, national, and international organizations combatting hunger. The month concludes with an all-school canned food drive. Every year the school tops the previous year with the number of cans donated. She also encourages her classmates to donate the monetary equivalent of what they would normally spend on one meal.
In order to spend more time volunteering, Sophia selected a senior class schedule that allows her to devote large blocks of time to Feeding America San Diego. At the food bank, Sophie organizes corporate volunteer groups, assists the volunteers, and supports the staff. She is part of a volunteer leadership program that allows her to shadow executives and learn about their day-to-day operations. The experience is extremely valuable because she aspires to start her own non-profit one day.
Sophia is a committed and passionate young woman dedicated to hunger-relief. We’re proud to honor such a bright star this month with the Hunger Hero Paper Plate award.
Every month millions of Americans volunteer their time to help end hunger in America. At Cheeky, we’re not only on a mission to help end hunger, but bring light to all the amazing people that make it possible. Every month we’ll recognize local hunger heroes in communities across the United States with the Cheeky Paper Plate Awards. Nominate someone today.
