Homeless people are seen on every corner of Los Angeles, especially on Skid Row, at the heart of Downtown Los Angeles, serving as a home to almost 20,000 homeless men, women, and children. Union Rescue Mission, serves as a beacon of hope right in the center of Skid Row.
The URM has a mission to offer a “path of self-sufficiency to men, women, and children who have lost everything.” Through job training, actual jobs, education, and emergency services, the homeless are offered a straight forward, yet often difficult path, to turn their lives around. URM looks like an ordinary building on the outside, yet on the inside it holds numerous opportunities for the homeless. A dentist, library, gym, laundry room, children’s room, cafeteria, and multiple-bed dormitories are just some of the things that are open to the homeless of L.A. who are committed to changing their own lives and the lives of their families for the better. Infusing Christian message to serve as hope and healing, the United Rescue Mission hopes to help the homeless be healed for a changed life and find their way home.
This week the Cheeky team was fortunate enough to get a behind the scenes look, and even help out. We were just as thrilled to help out the homeless as they were to be helped by us. Upon arrival, we were given an incredible tour of all the opportunities behind the doors of URM. Alex, our great tour guide and story teller, took us through endless hallways of even more endless opportunities, letting us see the homeless men, women, and children in their everyday lives. We even got to see some men in a playfully competitive game of soccer in the gym!
Next, we were headed to the kitchen – the part we were most excited about. First stop was the sink, where we were to suit up in aprons, hair nets, gloves, and of course, soap. The team then split up to provide an efficient assembly line for getting out the first round of meals. Half the team stayed in the kitchen, preparing the food, while the other half went behind the counter preparing the plates (what we do best!) to be passed out to the expected long line of customers. We served two different groups, scrubbing the tables and preparing plates in between each group. Each person that got a plate was so happy to have a full plate and a soon full tummy. We were honored to serve such a friendly group. We can’t wait to do it again!
At Cheeky, we're committed to make mealtime matter. In addition to donating a meal for every Cheeky pack sold, we believe in putting actions behind our words. That's why we make sure we can take time out of our work day to serve others. Be sure to follow us on social media for live updates on our volunteer events and other Cheekyness:
