At Cheeky, we’re on a mission to help end hunger, and we know we’re not alone. Millions of Americans volunteer their time to the Feeding America network of food banks. Thanks to these local heroes, Feeding America is able to provide meals to those who need them. It takes a village!

That’s why every month Cheeky will recognize someone leading the fight against hunger in their own community with the Cheeky Paper Plate Awards.

We’re proud to announce our first Paper Plate Award recipients… the Kurt Family.

Kemal and Jimena are small business owners in San Carlos, CA where they run two restaurants. This year they were awarded Business of the Year for their restaurant Spasso.  And just last month, they celebrated their second annual Thanksgiving feast for people in need at their restaurant The Cask.

Over Thanksgiving, Kemal and Jimena and their children Sofia and Ale served more than 230 meals to the local community absolutely free. With the help of 30 volunteers, the Kurt family served turkey, mashed potatoes, and green beans with delicious pumpkin pie for dessert. The generous Kurts didn’t stop with serving meals; they also made sure each person went home with a bag of fresh fruit.

Although this tradition began in 2013, it was inspired by Kemal’s first job at a family restaurant when he moved to the United States. Kemal knows that hunger in America is a real problem. The Kurt parents want their children to understand food is a basic need that no one should have to go without. They’re committed to making a difference in their local community through their restaurants.

Thank you to the Kurt family. Together we are helping to end hunger.
