As Abdu’l-Bahá once wisely stated, “Where there is love, nothing is too much trouble and there is always time.” Skid Row, normally a place filled with loneliness and despair, was brought alive this past week with the Carnival of Love.
Justin Baldoni, the leading actor in Jane the Virgin, partnered with Union Rescue Mission to really make this event a hit! Each year, Baldoni celebrates his birthday weekend by inviting his friends and family to the carnival in order to provide clothing, food, toiletries, haircuts, and feet washing to the less fortunate. The goal, as Baldoni stated, " …was never to try to end homelessness or fix the problem – because truthfully it's far more complicated than we could ever realize – but we can spread love and we can connect with people.”
Last Saturday, January 23rd, Cheeky attended the #WeLoveYouSkidrow charity event in Downtown, LA. Cheeky provided all of the paper plates, napkins, cutlery, and tablecovers for the carnival in addition to setting up the dining area of the event. Those in attendance were able to choose from our lime green, turquoise, and pink paper plates and cutlery before being served.
It was a beautiful sight being able to see so many people’s eyes light up simply because of how vibrant our products are. You can’t help but experience feelings of happiness and joy! With our bright colors and lively patterns, our tableware really served as a nice change of scenery for those that were able to attend.
Each volunteer was so willing and eager to help whether it meant decorating tables to eat at or wrapping utensils for mealtime. Volunteers from all over Southern California worked together and were united under the common cause of providing meals to those who were in need.
The event was extremely rewarding for Cheeky, along with all who helped make the event such a success. Our Cheeky volunteers served meals to around 2,000 people facing hunger. Not only were we able to serve meals, but we were also able to act as friends, listeners, confidantes, and a strong support system to those who needed it!
A daring few even decided to take on the dance floor together, showing off their latest dance moves while singing along to their favorite songs. Looking around, smiling faces were seen for miles. Hugs, laughter, and handshakes were exchanged between people who were, up until this point, strangers living on the streets together.
It is true that nothing brings people closer together than a good meal and even better company. It is safe to say that we are already anticipating the #WeLoveYouSkidrow event for next year!
