Did you know that 1 in 6 people in L.A. County experience hunger and that it’s the most populated county in the U.S.? Cheeky invited local influencers and friends for a coffee chat at the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank to learn about hunger in our community and brainstorm what we all can do to help.
In an intimate Q&A, Michael Flood, President and CEO of L.A. Regional Food Bank, Cherie Simon, Director of Entertainment Industry Relations at Feeding America, and PJ Brice, CEO and Co-Founder of Cheeky, discussed the real struggles of hunger in L.A. County. It was a huge wakeup call to hear these startling facts:
- 2,000 children are served meals at 27 sites daily after school.
- 33,000 volunteers donate their time to the Food Bank annually.
- The average amount of CalFresh benefits (“food stamps”) received per household is about $200 per month.
Michael Flood also led the team on a tour of the facilities and explained how the Food Bank operates. They truck in donations from businesses like Target and local farmers and then sort the goods before distributing it to 670 local agencies. Agencies include food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, school programs, and seniors citizen programs throughout L.A. County.
Then it was time to take action! With the help of the volunteer coordinators, the team worked together to sort and pack fresh apples. The cases of apples will be distributed to the local agencies where individuals drop by to pick up food.
It was a great day of building awareness, developing friendships, and taking action. There were no bad apples in this bunch! Cheeky is proud to join the fight against hunger and we thank everyone at Los Angeles Regional Food Bank for allowing us to spend the day making a difference.
